My protagonist, Kathryn, gets caught in a wild fire with the detective who is investigating the disappearance of her husband. Several years ago I had to evacuate my two young granddaughters as a wild fire swept towards their home. This experience inspired both the scene in my book and my giveaway!
Excerpt
He came to a stop and rolled down his window when they reached the barrier. They were greeted by a blast of hot, sooty air. Kathryn thought the officer manning the barricade looked like a bandit. His cowboy-style hat was pulled low, mirrored sunglasses hid his eyes and a dark blue bandana covered his nose and mouth. His khaki-colored uniform had turned a dusty gray with matching combat boots.
“Hey Mike, glad you made it,” the sheriff’s deputy said after pulling down the bandana. “Captain says we can give you about twenty minutes to get in and evacuate your horses.”
“Thanks, Rudy, I owe you one.”
“Not a problem,” the deputy answered, pulling the roadblock aside. “Just do me a favor and get out of here as quickly as you can. This fire has a mind of its own, jumping roads and firebreaks like I’ve never seen. I’d hate for you and your friend to get caught in the middle of it.”
“Don’t worry. We’ll be out of here before you know it.”
Kathryn started choking on the thick smoke that had swirled into the Explorer. Her breathing became more rapid and her palms started sweating.
What are you getting yourself into? Is it too late to back out?
Mike quickly rolled the window up and turned the air conditioning on high before finally turning off onto a single-lane blacktop road blocked by an elegant, wrought-iron electric gate. He pushed the remote button attached to the sun visor and the gate slowly opened. The road wound between pastures enclosed by once-pristine white fences, now grimy with soot. Drab olive-green eucalyptus trees lined the drive. The murky air caused the SUV’s headlights to come on. They crossed a stone bridge under which a dry river bed ran, then turned a bend in the road and his house came into view. But they didn’t notice. Instead, their eyes were riveted on the fifty-foot roaring flames shooting up from the hill behind Mike’s house, less than a mile away.

Yes. Two years ago, the worst wildfire in CA history took place not too far from us. Scary.
No, but fires in FL this year were close to my son’s home. LOTS of smoke.
No. Fortunately we don’t live in an area with wildfires.
My Girl Scout troop was in 1997. We got off the mountain just in time. Just had to keep eveyone, cool , calm & collected.
Thankfully, I have never experienced a wildfire.
Depends. When I was 9 or so and we were camping. My sisters and I started to do a little rough housing while roasting marshmallows. My folks ordered us to stop doing that around a fire when I knocked my sisters stick, which had a little flame on the end, out of her hand into the bushes. My Dad was right there to grab the stick. Stamp out the smoldering weed. Then Mom poured water on it. He promised to set our tail ends on fire if we ever did anything like that again. They had always cautioned us about playing around fire, etc. Very safety cautious. It was rare that us kids goofed off like that within the “circle”. When around a fireplace, campfire, etc. My Dad always had a rule about conduct. We didn’t break that rule very often. And when the folks said they would set out tail ends on fire? You could be sure that they would have been blistered if we goofed off near any type of stove again. A year after we left AZ there was a wildfire near where we used to live. We went down to help our friends and family in the area in the aftermath. Looking for lost pets and cleaning up.
The pain we experienced finding the various animals never leaves
No
Fortunately, we have never had the threat of wildfire near us. What I do see on the news is terrifying and I could not imagine what the experience would be like.
I have never experienced the threat of a wildfire here in Ohio.
Received the book on Kindle today. Starting tonight.
Congrats! Best of luck. May your book spread like a wild fire. Not that I would know anything about that.
We have blessedly never been threatened by a wildfire. Happy Book Birthday!!!!
I live in So. Oregon and we have plenty of fires. I have never had to evacuate, but I have left because the smoke was too much. It is very scary when it is close.
No, but How terrifying that would be. Fire scares me more than anything!
No, but How terrifying that would be!
We had a fire on our farm when I was 6. It was started by lightening . We lost our barn 5 cows and a bull .
Not directly but two close calls. One year the buildings accross the street were on fire but didn’t jump to us. Another time, my home was on a wild life presrve area and the trees all around us were burning and smoke filled our houses but the fire didn’t actually touch the houses.
No I haven’t been. I’m so thankful that I haven’t been in that situation!
We have been very fortunate to only have our lungs, sinuses, and eyes threatened by wild fires. Knocking on wood… Thank you for the chance to win. I can’t wait to get my hands on your book and Happy Book Birthday!
Wow! So excited for you and to read the book. Will be on my tbr list (already is actually) for sure!!
Sorry posted before finished and then double posted, didnt realize it went through.
Wow! So excited for you and to read the book. Will be on my tbr list (already is actually) for sure!! Thankfully never had a firs( knock wood)
Best wishes on the book baby.
While I do live in California, I have never lived so close to the areas that have wildfires. I live downtown so, not a lot of wildfires there thank goodness!
I live in Illinois so am not threatened by the fires at all. But my brother lives in Sonoma and he always has to watch out. Happy Book Release Day!!
So glad your granddaughters are ok. I have never had to experience anything like this. Congratulations on your book.
I have never been in a threatening fire situation, I can’t even imagine how horrible that must be to go thru. Thanks for this amazingly generous giveaway.
My daughter lives in San Diego, California. A few years ago they had one coming towards them. They got it put out before it got to their area. It was smokey their for a while. And thank you for the chance to win all that nice stuff.
No. Luckily I don’t live in an area prone to wildfires. A few years ago we were in California and their were fires in the area. We were at Disneyland and since it was so windy, we were covered with ashes that were carried in on the wind.
No we haven’t but I have several friends that have been threatened by a wildfire!
thankfully, I have never been threatened by a wildfire. thanks for the giveaway, and Happy Book Birthday!
Thank God I don’t live where there are wildfires.
No, thank God.
No but the idea of one scares me. Congratulations on the release of your book. I can’t wait to read it!
There are only two things in this world I am afraid of – fire and drowning. This book is phenomenal! I can’t wait for the next one!
There was a fire in the Bosque (Albuquerque NM) that came close to my parents home a dozen years or more ago. And there was one in the Oklahoma City area that threatened my daughter’s home.
We have had wild fires around us. I live close to Gatlinburg, TN, where there were terrible wildfires.
No we haven’t..
No, I’m glad to say we haven’t, and hope we never will!
Few wildfires have burned close this summer about 50 miles away.
When I lived in the city of Orange, we had to be “on alert” when there was a wild fire in Silverado Canyon/Irvine Park area. Our apartment complex was in its path. Scary stuff! But, we didn’t have to evacuate thanks to the awesome firefighters.
We are fortunate to live where wild fires are pretty much unheard of. The worst we ever see out in the country in Ohio is maybe a barn fire or a piece of equipment caught fire.
never by a wildfire but my kids lost everything in a fire. I grew up on the Napa River and faced floods but fire is much worse.
No, we have never been threatened by a forest fire. The only fire that ever caused any harm or threat to us was when I home was set on fire one year when we were away for Christmas.
Not that I can remember! Thank goodness!! Congrats on your book, it’s a great read!!
Thankfully we have not. The new stories look so horrible, I just cannot imagine what the families go through.
No we have not.
Yes, about 20 years ago, when I lived in San Diego.
Thankfully no
Thankfully no one in my family has been threatened by a wildfire. We did weather several hurricanes when living in Daytona Beach many years ago, but in many ways the wildfires we read about always seemed scarier.
Thank goodness, I’ve never been affected or around a wildfire. I can imagine it’s terrifying.
I’ve wanted to read GAME OF DECEIT ever since I read about it. Thanks for the chance to not only win a copy but also all the other amazing items in your giveaway package.
That sounds terrifying. Thank God you got them to safety.
I’ve never been directly affected by a wildfire. It looks very scary and I feel terrible for people that are affected by them!
No, thank goodness!
I’ve been blessed that I never had. But I have known those who have.
No I never have in Wisconsin thank goodness. A tree caught on fire from lightening in the yard, though.
thankfully no fires wild or otherwise. Although I have one cousin who is apparently cursed with a fire demon. She has had 3 houses burn down and lost everything all 3 times.
Oh my, your poor cousin!!! That is so very sad…
Knock on wood we’re never threatened by a wildfire.
This would be amazing to win! I don’t have a Kindle and have been trying to win one! Thanks for the chance and congrats on the release!
I’ve never really lived in an area where there are wildfires.
We enjoyed camping but it was usually in areas where
there was lots of clearing.
Looking forward to reading the book.
thanks for the chance.
Yay! Go, Kim, go!!!!!!!!!!!! We all wish you nothing but success.
No, never.. that would be so scary.
